Congratulations to (SVE) for putting on an excellent evening of celebration for the amazing volunteers in Stirling.  It was fantastic to meet the individuals who were behind the applications and to hear from their own words, the difference they make for others, through using their own time and skills.

Starting Up a Group

Offer 1: Start Up

There are many things to consider when starting a new group:  What are its aims? Who will be involved? What form should it take? How will it be funded?

SVE offers guidance and support at every stage, from the initial idea right though to becoming a fully-fledged and viable organisation.

Organisational Support staff can give guidance on the way forward:  what legal structure is best for your group, the make up of your committee, types of membership structure, recruitment of members and committee members, how to publicise your group, whether charitable status is appropriate... and a host of other issues.

We can also help with the drafting of documents such as constitutions, business plans and policies, and deliver start-up training.

Many of these services will come under the other Organisational Support Offers:  Structures & Governance, Funding & Fundraising, Financial, Communications - and you will be advised which of these are relevant to your needs. For organisations operating as social enterprises, we can support you under our Social Enterprise Offer.

Offer 14: Forums

Stirlingshire Voluntary Enterprise offers support with Third Sector Forums that address a variety of community planning needs. SVE is the facilitator of various Forums in the Stirling area.

These are open, multipurpose events.  There is a three-stage format, which is designed to secure information, generate ideas and create interaction between interest groups with a minimum of advanced planning.

SVE supports by acting as a hub for information and the distribution of information to relevant parties, via email to all members or via the SVE eBulletin.

SVE is also happy to support and facilitate Forum meetings, which can be organised at any time but are particularly useful at an early stage in a participation or development process.

Structures & Governance

Offer 2: Structures & Governance

What form your organisation takes and how it is managed are crucial factors in determining how it meets its aims and objectives. There are many different types of voluntary organisations, all with different features and limitations. Getting your legal structure right is important because it will determine what you can do, the regulations you have to abide by, and the liabilities your committee may have.

We can meet with you one-to-one to go over all the options, and help you decide what form is right for you, whether it's a single or double tier structure, whether a charity, SCIO (Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation), company, CIC (Community Interest Company) or unincorporated organisation. We will provide templates and model documents, help you draw up a constitution or other governing documents, guide your applications for charitable or SCIO status and interact with OSCR (the Office of the Scottish Charities Regulator) on your behalf. We can also help you prepare a business plan and necessary policy documents.

Having a well run committee or governance group is key to an organisation's success. We can give guidance on best practice and develop board capacity through training in areas such as Trustees' Roles and Responsibilities
